The father I should have been

by Dr. MW Mkhonta

Chapter 02

The Prodigal Son & The Waiting Father

The parable of the prodigal son is ultimately a masterclass in the heart of a forgiving father. When the younger son demanded his inheritance and squandered it in distant extravagance, the father did not lock the gates forever; instead, his eyes remained fixed on the horizon.

What the Prodigal Teaches Us About Responsibility

  • 1. Safe Harbor: A home must be a place where a broken child feels safe enough to return, rather than terrified of condemnation.
  • 2. Active Waiting: The father ran to meet his son while he was still a long way off. Availability means watching, waiting, and welcoming repentance.
  • 3. Restoring Dignity: A responsible father covers shame with a robe, ring, and shoes—reaffirming identity when the world strips it away.

Dr. MW Mkhonta’s Reflection

“If I could turn back the hands of time, I would spend less time building portfolios and more time building sanctuary within my four walls. A father’s greatest legacy is not what he leaves behind, but what he builds inside them.”
