The Rod of Correction & Protection
“Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4). The rod represents authority, discipline, and defense against predators. In the hands of a shepherd, the rod was used to ward off wolves and lions, and to count and inspect sheep under its passing shadow.
A father's rod is not an instrument of abusive anger, but a boundary of absolute safety. Children wander into dangerous territories when boundaries are absent. The rod provides correction that steers wandering feet back onto the path of life.
