DATING LIKE A BOSS

CHAPTER 12

SAFETY AND SMART STRATEGIES FOR FIRST DATES

When engaging in Christian dating, prioritizing safety and smart strategies on first dates is vital to honoring both your personal well-being and your core faith values.

Here are key points to consider for a safe, purposeful, and meaningful first date in a Christian context:

  1. Choose a public venue and inform someone

Opt for a well-populated, public place for your initial date to ensure both safety and comfort. Always let a trusted friend or family member know your plans, including specific details like the location, time, and the person you are meeting. In today's world where risks like human trafficking exist, sharing your itinerary with those who respect your values is a crucial layer of self-protection.

  2. Keep it short and low-pressure

Arrange a date that lasts around an hour to prevent feeling trapped if conversational chemistry is lacking. Keep the meeting light and simple, focusing on getting acquainted without the pressure of heavy topics or immediate commitment.

  3. Dress comfortably and confidently

Wear something that makes you feel comfortable, attractive, and genuinely confident—avoiding anything that causes physical discomfort or distraction. How you perceive yourself often reflects in your speech. As Scripture notes, out of the abundance of the heart (the mind) the mouth speaks; your inner thoughts and mindset are deeply tied to your words.

  4. Engage in meaningful conversation and listen well

Ask thoughtful questions that illuminate core values, passions, and spiritual walk, such as, "What are you most passionate about?", "What has God been teaching you lately?", or "What is your family background?". Actively listen to their answers; true growth and deeper understanding come from developing strong listening skills.

  5. Discuss faith openly

Christian dating encourages talking about faith and beliefs early on to confirm spiritual compatibility and ensure you are equally yoked. When I met Celiwe (my wife), for instance, I tested the depth of the Word by asking for her favorite verse. She shared Matthew 5:14:

"You are the light of the world - like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see."

That verse was a definitive green light; in my heart, I knew it was game over! A strong relationship is anchored upon the Rock, Christ Himself. As you converse, pay attention to the natural chemistry and alignment—when someone is truly calibrated for you, the affirming signs will be clear.

  6. Maintain physical and emotional boundaries

Establish clear boundaries before and during the date to honor your personal standards. Avoid physical intimacy on a first date to safeguard purity and build trust organically. First impressions leave lasting marks; rushing into physical closeness can project a careless narrative about your character. Do not disqualify yourself through poor conduct.

  7. Be intentional and reflective

Approach the date with a prayerful attitude before, during, and after. Be deeply intentional about how you pursue the connection, and take time afterward to reflect and seek divine guidance. Never ignore warning signs or red flags.

  8. Trust your instincts and prioritize your safety

If anything feels uneasy or uncomfortable, do not hesitate to step away from the situation. Your safety and well-being must always come first. You date because you are alive, healthy, and whole, so keep personal security at the top of your list.

  9. Allow chivalry and gentleness

Allow the gentleman to demonstrate chivalry if he is interested—such as opening doors, walking you to your car, or picking up the check—as this fosters mutual respect and confidence. If you are meeting at a restaurant as a lady, always be prepared to cover your own bill unless he explicitly clarifies that it is his treat.

By implementing these principles, Christian singles can navigate first dates with poise, safety, and respect, keeping a clear focus on building a relationship anchored in faith and mutual care.
