DATING LIKE A BOSS

CHAPTER 24

WHEN TO COMMIT AND TO WALK AWAY

In Christian dating, knowing when to commit and when to walk away involves discerning God's will for the relationship while honoring biblical principles, personal readiness, and emotional well-being.

When to Commit in Christian Dating

  1. Pray for guidance

Commitment should be prayed over individually and as a couple. Seeking God's timing and leading through prayer helps ensure the relationship is grounded in His will, making the decision feel natural and right.

  2. Shared faith and goals

Both partners should be on the same spiritual wavelength, committed to a relationship with God at the center, and united in their intentions, such as marriage. This alignment creates a strong foundation for commitment.

  3. Readiness for marriage roles

A Christian should commit when ready to fulfill God's roles in marriage responsibly, including emotional maturity and independence. Dating is meant to be a deliberate pathway toward finding a spouse, not just casual or indefinite hanging out.

  4. Building a Christ-centered relationship

Commitment grows from loving and serving each other, praying together, studying Scripture, setting boundaries that honor God, and seeking wise counsel from mentors or church leaders.

  5. Mutual accountability and godliness

Commitment includes mutual encouragement in faith and living out Christlike values like patience, kindness, and selflessness. The relationship should help both partners grow in sanctification.

When to Walk Away in Christian Dating

  1. Unequally yoked

If one partner is not a genuine believer or unwilling to pursue the Lord, it creates spiritual discord, which Scripture warns against in 2 Corinthians 6:14.

  2. Lack of Christlike behavior

Red flags include selfishness, control, disrespect, avoidance of spiritual growth, dishonesty, or failure to support each other's faith and calling.

  3. Repeated disrespect or abuse

Any form of mistreatment or emotional, physical, or spiritual harm is an absolute and immediate sign to leave the relationship safely.

  4. Loss of identity in Christ

When the relationship causes you to lose sight of your identity and worth in Christ alone, and you become overly dependent on the partner for personal fulfillment, it is time to reevaluate or walk away.

  5. Resistance to accountability and godly counsel

If either partner rejects accountability or resists seeking guidance from spiritual mentors, it hinders growth and can lead to unhealthy relational patterns.

Practical Advice

  • Date prayerfully and with intentionality, seeking clarity and contentment in singleness if commitment is not yet evident.
  • Spend time discerning and communicating openly about the future while enjoying each stage of the relationship.
  • When doubts or red flags arise, seek godly counsel and prayerful discernment before deciding to continue or end the relationship.

Ultimately, commitment in Christian dating is best when it is the result of mutual spiritual readiness, clear intentions, and a relationship that honors God and nurtures both partners' faith. Walking away is necessary when foundational spiritual alignment or Christlike love is missing, or when the relationship threatens your well-being and spiritual growth.

This balanced approach ensures dating remains a journey toward a God-honoring marriage or a wise and graceful ending when needed.
